Networking Opportunity - Virginia Career Network

Collins Denny brought this group to my attention. They work on connecting people (electronically and in weekly presentations). The focus is broader than just IT, and that is a good thing for building your network and researching other opportunities.

I've registered with them, and browsed around on their site. Looks really good. I am going to be speaking at one of the events on Feb 10th.

This seems to be a well run organization. Many ex-CCS folks already there. The events seem to fill up in advance, so go ahead and sign up for them and get them on your calendar. An active calendar is a great way to stay positive about your job search!

See the LinkedIn Group for this, just search for "Virginia Career Network".
Check it out at: http://www.meetup.com/Virginia-Career-Network/

A blurb from the website:

Thank you for your interest in the Virginia Career Network. We meet in Charlottesville and Richmond with area job seekers on a weekly basis. Soon, we will be adding announcements for other organizations as well, those focused on helping job seekers. The Virginia Career Network is a volunteer-driven support group to benefit Virginian's who have recently been laid off.

The Virginia Career Network encourages networking as a strategy for finding unadvertised jobs and getting a good job. Our intent is to connect victims of recent layoff's with real jobs and real hiring managers. The group members are not just programmers and IT workers. There are people with experience in a number of areas, some of which are sales, marketing, hr, operaions, management, support, finance, accounting and more. Groups meet weekly to share effective coaching, networking and resources with area job seekers.

DRINKING LEAD - Time to Get Together!

Greg Layton and I decided at the YMCA the other night that it had been too long since the ex-CCS crowd had gotten together.

Since the ex-CCS crowd is now HUGE, the time seems right. Another train-wreck on the way, like the classic of 1998.

For all you IT introverted type ISTJ folks, this is a great opportunity to practice your network building skills in a safe environment.

When: February 6th (Friday), about 6pm.
Where: Legends, 7th street south Richmond
Why: Should be obvious. If it isn't, I will explain in person.
What: Swapping favorite memories of CCS. Probably not. Cussin' maybe.
Who: Anyone is invited. We don't care. They don't know we are coming anyway.

See ya there. Pass this along to anyone who may be interested.

Job Lead - 47 Jobs, Various Positions, All Over Virginia

A fellow Richmond CIO passed along this lead for SRA International. Her brother is very connected there. I looked at just the IT jobs in Virginia, and found 47. Some require secret or above DOD clearance, some don't. Many are out of town, but there are telecommuting options too.

Out of town work has to occupy part of your job search strategy.

Check it out:
http://www.sra.com/careers/

They have a bonus-referral program going, so please put Dan Puchalski down as the reference if/when you apply (the brother).

Here is a blurb from their website:

SRA is dedicated to solving complex problems of global significance for clients in national security, civil government and global health. With three decades experience, SRA delivers expert knowledge, technical tools and trusted solutions for missions that matter – to us, our clients and the world.

Good luck!

Job Lead - Northrop Grumman - Multiple LOCAL positions

NG is apparently trying to staff up a bit. This is a combination of VITA work and other customers. I think these are full time (non-contract) positions with NG. I counted 18 positions in total, make sure you search for Chester and Richmond. NG is a HUGE company. I worked with them for months before coming to the county, and I was impressed by the people.

I noticed project management, program management, technical writing and other positions open.

Check them out at: http://www.northropgrumman.com/

Job Lead - Virginia Credit Union - LOCAL!

Passed on from a co-worker ....

The Virginia Credit Union (VACU) has three positions open for network engineer, network manager and an engineer/architect position. They were listed last week in the paper, so they may be getting ready to close them.

I know the CIO at VACU, and he is a great guy. I worked for him for 2 years and he is one of the best bosses I have ever had. I'd be happy to make a personal reccomendation (for any of you that I know!)

I have another friend that works there, and loves it as well. Seems to be a quality organization.

Check it out!

Job Lead - Out Of Town, Multiple Opportunities

I have a friend who works at BD (Becton Dickson, Inc) who says there are lots of IT positions open nationwide for them, but there is a hiring freeze right now. Good time to apply, and maybe wait for the inevitable hiring thaw. You never know which positions are frozen, and which ones are not.

Remember, if it is out of town work, you can always apply and then look for telecommuting opportunities or other arrangements.

From their website:
BD is a medical technology company that serves healthcare institutions, life science researchers, clinical laboratories, industry and the general public. BD manufactures and sells a broad range of medical supplies, devices, laboratory equipment and diagnostic products. BD is headquartered in the United States and has offices in nearly 50 countries worldwide.

I counted 17 IT positions, nationwide. Check them out at www.bd.com . Follow the careers link. Gotta love anyone with a two letter domain name!

Hang in there.

First Post

I have talking to lots of folks recently about IT jobs in Richmond, VA. There is an incredible buzz out there about the new pool of available talent, the market, the economy, the effect of the new administration, etc.

Not all the news is bad. It may seem that way if you are just beginning your job search.

I hope to use this blog to relay information I have about job leads, resume tips, stuff to keep in mind, etc. I won't bore you with pep talks or famous quotes from people. This is about job leads, recommendations on companies I'd work for, and recruiters I have done business with and respect.

I was talking to a recruiter who told me about an URGENT need for SAS business analyst types. I'm thinking that CCS used SAS, and I know they had strong BA types, so .... Hence the blog.

I have two other blogs on this service:
condreyfamily.blogspot.com - All about the family, what we do, vacations, etc. Skip it unless you know us.
cio-musings.blogspot.com - Short ramblings from a technical CIO's perspective, when something strikes my fancy or I run across unusual information.
